Yankees vs. Dodgers: World Series matchups

The Yankees and the Dodgers have a storied history behind their rivalry as this duel has taken place more than any other in the World Series

New York vs Los Angeles, East vs West, Broadway vs Hollywood, Statue of Liberty vs Walk of Fame, Ohtani vs Judge, and more. The two most famous franchises in MLB will be at the world center-stage during the 2024 World Series.

The Yankees and the Dodgers have a storied history behind their rivalry as this duel has taken place more than any other in October. We haven’t witnessed this match-up since 1981 however, when LA won the World Series during ‘Fernandomanía’. Mexican pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, the namesake of that fervor in LA, passed away last Tuesday at 63 years old.

Yankees 4-1 Dodgers (1941)

The 1941 World Series was the first edition of the rivalry between both franchises when they were both still in New York, which was also their first “subway series”. The Brooklyn Dodgers were almost swept by the Yankees, who benefitted from Mickey Owen’s error in Game 4 which helped the Bronx Bombers come back, putting them one game away from eventually winning the World Series.

A historical fact commemorates this 1947 World Series as it was the first to be broadcast on television, covering all seven games of a very close series that ended with the Yankees reaching another title.

Yankees 4-1 Dodgers (1949)

The rivalry between the two franchises was forged in the 1949 World Series while the Casey Stengel-led Yankees again dominated the Dodgers in five games.

Yankees 4-3 Dodgers (1952)

The 1952 World Series was defined in seven games for the second time, and although the Dodgers looked stronger, the Yankees played their cards well under the bat and took a 4-0 lead in their budding World Series rivalry.

Yankees 4-2 Dodgers (1953)

A year later, the Yankees and the Dodgers faced each other again in the 1953 World Series and history turned one more time in favor of the Yankees, who seemed to be used to beating the Dodgers.

Dodgers 4-3 Yankees (1955)

Finally, the 1955 World Series came with the long-awaited moment for the Dodgers franchise when they defeated the Yankees in seven games for the first time with Jackie Robinson as their star, albeit with a controversial call between Robinson and Yogi Berra who to his last day, swore he had him out at home plate in a decisive play.

The following year we saw this match-up again in the 1956 World Series. The Dodgers couldn’t maintain their momentum and ended up losing to the Yankees in seven games with a historic performance by the pitcher Don Larsen in Game 5 when he pitched a perfect game, the only one in the history of the World Series.

In 1958, the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles to build another story for their franchise. Five years later, they added their first World Series in California, led by Sandy Koufax, to sweep the Yankees in four games. The only series in their rivalry that ended in a sweep.

Yankees 4-2 Dodgers (1977)

The confrontation between both franchises for the 1977 World Series is especially remembered for the overwhelming victory of the Yankees led by Reggie Jackson who wrote his name in history by hitting five home runs, the most in this instance, something remembered by the Yankee fans who named him ‘Mr. October’.

Yankees 4-2 Dodgers (1978)

The 1978 World Series was the same as the previous year: the Yankees raised another dominance over the Dodgers with an 8-1 tally in their October rivalry.

Dodgers 4-2 Yankees (1981)

The 1981 edition gave fans the last previous World Series match-up between these franchises. A remarkable year for Los Angeles finished with a historic season under Tommy Lasorda and a special performance by Fernando Valenzuela who led the Dodgers in Game 3 to come back and defeat New York in six games.
