The step to the big leagues would take place on February 3, 2007, with a decisive victory over Sam Hoger by unanimous decision, raising his record to a perfect 16-0.
His moment of glory would come on May 23, 2009, when Machida knocked out undefeated champion Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 98 to win the Light Heavyweight title, his crowning achievement under the UFC banner.
Lyoto’s style is eclectic, with techniques that he takes up mainly from Shotokan karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, combining wrestling and sumo techniques.
The ‘Dragon’ gave his best in every fight against top-level opponents with victories over top fighters such as Randy Couture, Tito Ortíz, Thiago Silva, Victor Belfort and Dan Henderson, among others. He was recognized four times with the KO of the Night, three times Fight of the Night and on Performance of the Night award. He ended his UFC career with a 26-8 ledger in 2018.
Machida’s career at Bellator
Machida tried a second attempt at glory as an MMA fighter when in June of 2018 he signed a multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. So far, he hasn’t been as effective in his campaign, suffering three losses in a row, most recently against Ryan Bader this past April. His MMA legacy is cemented however, with his 26 wins and 11 knockouts over an impressive 18 year career.
